It also raises a question about whether Wilson's word as a non-slaveholding white boy would have been sufficient to save Stewart. 34 In all probability, the constable could have ignored the protests of any white child. But the official would not trample upon the rights of a white slaveholder. " Slaveowners were literally free to brutalize their own property with impunity, but they did not yield that "right" to others. 35 This is not to suggest that Wilson's interests in saving Stewart were entirely related to his association with the enslaved boy as a property owner rather than as a personal companion and friend.
