The Wapel, as it called today, is a small river which marked the southern border of Rüstringen with Ammerland in Saxon territory. Again, such an addition can have been relevant only for a readership/ audience in Rüstringen. Other texts in R1 seem to be intended for a Riustring audience only, because they explicitly regulate matters for the inhabitants of Riustringen, especially the Riustring Statutes (VIII), the New Riustring Statutes (IX) and the Riustring Synodal Law (XX). Still other ones give no clue as to their regional origin.

On the other hand, I wonder whether Buma was right in giving the same title to the two items that now go under the title Riustring Compensations for Priests. e. wergeld) for all priests. 27 Finally, there is no indication whatsoever to locate these two complementary texts in Rüstringen. On the contrary, the ‘Matter of Frisia’ in the proem to item XII lifts its contents emphatically above the regional level, and the mention of St Liudger rather than of St.
