That’s what breathing new life into your home is all about. indd 49 6/8/12 4:52 PM I have a faint memory of being messy when I was a child. My mom told me to clean my room, and I simply made pathways to the door, the bed, the dresser, and the closet. That was clean enough for me. When I hit sixth grade, though, something happened. After living in military housing all of my life, we finally moved into a real house (my mom cried over it, too, but it was a real house nonetheless), and I had a say in the decor of my room for the very first time ever.
I purchased two smaller chandeliers on clearance at a home store, painted and rewired them, and used a plastic cord cover to hide their cords where they ran along the wall. Paint the cord covers the same color as the wall and ceiling to provide additional camouflage. Tip: Most chandelier chains aren’t very attractive, and they’re very simple to cover with a custom sleeve. Cut a piece of fabric about 4 inches wide and twice as long as the length of the chain you want to cover. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise inside out and sew the edges together.
Isn’t it so easy to get preoccupied with our homes (and our lives) needing to be perfect or at least appearing that way? The idea of perfection is in our faces and shoved down our throats regularly in the form of images that have been edited to attain a level of perfection not possible in real life. This pursuit of impossible perfection can easily overshadow the things in life that should be more important, like our families and our faith. I have to remind myself (on many occasions) that there are more valuable pursuits than clutter-free counters, perfectly fluffed pillows, and spot-free slipcovers.
