Adding Borders I don’t know why, but it still always surprises me when people have different quilt phobias and dislikes than I do. As if we were all the same person! But adding borders is one I shared with many quilters for many years, and it is still not my favorite part of the process. I think that usually when I am done with the blocks being assembled and I can see the quilt together, I feel done and don’t want to spend the time and energy it takes to add the borders. This is especially true if there is more than one border to the pattern.

It should fit exactly over the unsewn opening. Trim the remaining fabric to a ¼" seam and finger press the seam open. Step 5 2¼″ Sew HINT: I have discovered that if I merely overlap the fabrics Unstitched quilt edge to measure how much I will need to trim off, I almost inevitably cut a tiny bit more than I need and then struggle to not tuck the fabric when I am sewing it down. Now when I overlap the fabric edges to determine where I will trim the excess, I pull them fairly tight along the quilt.

Now I know that thrice is not a word that most of us ever use, but you get the idea! In my experience, it is a very good idea to measure each measurement three times to ensure that you have the correct amount. This means that you lay your quilt on a flat surface and repeat each measurement three times—or more if your numbers are coming out different each time. In this instance it is really better to be safe than sorry. Cutting a border too short because of a bad measuring job is one of the most frustrating mistakes you can make for two reasons: You are so close to the end and also there is so much fabric waste involved.
